Camila P. was born with Treacher Collins, a rare genetic syndrome that stunts the development of facial bones. When she enrolled as a patient at Grace Medical Home the fall of 2019, her condition was immediately diagnosed.
Her first appointment with her pediatric, Dr. Marvin Hardy, was extensive and included consultation with Grace’s Director of Dental Operations, Michelle Lawton. However, Camila feared dentists. To ease her anxiety, Michelle performed a dental exam on Camila while she was in the pediatric room. She brought Camila a toy, made her laugh, and built trust with her.
Michelle recognized that in addition to cleaning and fluoride, Camila would need a panoramic, X-ray, three extractions, and fillings. A follow-up appointment for mid-December was scheduled. When Camila came in for her cleaning, she ran to Michelle to give her a hug. No longer nervous, Camila was ready for her appointment. While the cleaning was overstimulating for Camila, the appointment went well.
The next week, Camila had a third appointment to remove three teeth. She handled anesthesia well and walked away from her appointment smiling. Her treatment plan will resume in January. Every step of the way, the Dental Center coordinates care with the pediatric team to ensure Camila receives the best care.
